Parts of the Atom continued

Here is more about the parts of the atom:

Protons and neutrons are made of quarks, electrons aren't made of anything because they are so small.
Quarks are made of gluons
The six types of quarks are up, down, top, bottom, charm, strange
The 3 types of quarks that made protons are up up down
The 3 types of quarks that made up neutrons are down down up
AMU stands for atomic mass unit
Protons= 1 amu, neutrons= 1 amu electrons=1/1836 amu

Parts of the Atom

Atoms
  • the atom is a basic unit of matter that has a dense, small, central nucleus that is surrounded by a haze of negatively charged electrons
  • the nucleus consists of protons and neutrons
  • the electrons of an atom are bound to the nucleus by an electromagnetic force
  • a group of atoms bound together forms a molecule
  • when atoms of different elements are together- they form compound molecules
  • atoms lack a well defined outer boundary
  • dimensions usually described in atomic radius
  • electrons extremely lightweight

Extra Credit

For the extra credit I chose the compound hydrogen peroxide. I chose this because I know that once some people get their ears pierced, they use this to clean and disinfect their ears. I really wanted to know why. Well hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidizing properties. It can also be used as bleach. It is used as a disinfectant, antiseptic, and oxidizer. I think that it is really cool that we use a chemical compound that can be really powerful on our ear piercings. But it is diluted so that it doesn't hurt or harm us. When it is put on your skin and not diluted hydrogen peroxide can cause temporary whitening to skin. This is why I think that hydrogen peroxide is interesting.
